Treat yourself to a cup of Joe and artisan sourdough at this new Oakland coffee roastery States Coffee and Bread located at 4008 Martin Luther King Jr Way in Oakland. Co-owner Keith Gehrke’s been in the coffee business since 2003. Starting out as a barista, Gehrke made lattes during the day and played in a band at night. In Seattle and Portland, Gehrke learned about roasting and fell in love with the art of coffee-making before moving back to the Bay Area.
